*Ekphrasis: Using one medium of art to describe another form of art.
Ex: a poem about a painting, a photograph inspired by a film, etc...
Inspired by the art piece, "United Globe", by Vernon Fisher.
Melting, Melted
I see cars running,
the foul exhaust
escaping.
Waves of heat
transferring
from object to object.
Puffs of
gray smoke
rise
from buildings
blending with the sky's
veil of white.
Ice
from solid
to liquid.
The world
melting
around the globe
before our eyes
slipping off in patches,
falling.
From 80
to 120 degrees
Mercury,
Rising and rising.
Pressure buildup.
Red bursts
while
Blue melts.

Dancing Dreams (*Ekphrastic Poem by Maddie)
*Ekphrasis: Using one medium of art to describe another form of art.
Ex: a poem about a painting, a photograph inspired by a film, etc...
Inspired by the painting, "Moth Dance" by Maggie Taylor.
Dancing Dreams
When light has ceased, and the crescent glows,
an eight year old girl slips into her square backyard,
wearing her sister’s worn, gray tights
and pink ratty ballet slippers,
a faded, blue, stained blouse
tucked in at the waist of her black shorts
with a brown and yellow striped hem.
Two golden feathers
she discovered while twirling
along the barricade of trees
along the barricade of trees
sprout from her short brown hair, like rabbit ears.
Wearing her mother’s
allaying cold eye mask
allaying cold eye mask
taken from the freezer,
she stands upon a rusted blue tin
while dancing around with butterflies
only night can see.
Glowing against the starless sky,
she dances,
with her fluttering dreams
of a ballet artist.
Bounding and gliding
through musty air.
Posing against the purple sky,
as airy luminescent wings flit around,
enhancing her woven trance.
Seven Months of Summer (Freeverse by Maddie Carrola)
Seven Months of Summer
Heat lines
rise
off the asphalt,
while parched
brittle trees,
bend, and snap
in the unbending air
and yellowed grass
crunches
when stepped
on.
Withered cacti
shrivel
in this
desert- like bubble.
The sun,
penetrating
the life,
scorching the land.
Fires erupt from
the sun burnt soil.
Red, Orange, Yellow
turn to
Black and Gray
ash,
forming
tears of loss.
Heat lines
rise
off the asphalt,
while parched
brittle trees,
bend, and snap
in the unbending air
and yellowed grass
crunches
when stepped
on.
Withered cacti

Twinkling Stars of Texas (Freeverse by Maddie)
Twinkling Stars of Texas
Laying back against the
red, shingled roof,
gazing upon the darkened backdrop
of the night skies.
My sighs of warm breath escape,
and cloud the crisp air,
for there are
stars,
incandescent orbs of light
sprinkled
upon the heavens.
Their shimmering beauty
as they flash and flicker
in the brisk air of Fall.
Blazing across black nights
with resplendent gleams,
blanketing the cold sphere.
Laying back against the
red, shingled roof,
gazing upon the darkened backdrop
of the night skies.
My sighs of warm breath escape,
and cloud the crisp air,
for there are
stars,
incandescent orbs of light
sprinkled
upon the heavens.
Their shimmering beauty
as they flash and flicker
in the brisk air of Fall.
Blazing across black nights
with resplendent gleams,
blanketing the cold sphere.

Away (Petrarchan Sonnet by Maddie)
the end imparted, and washed ashore
as the words you spouted were found untrue,
your aura began to smell of mildew,
that reek of old stale water resting beneath a wooden door.
your profane words without a cure
your saccharine eyes, vitreous, I could see through.
leaving us askew,
and falling out of place, away I began to soar
above and beyond the spacious blue, free
warm currents with the ability to lift,
while below you looked astray.
to myself I smiled so simply,
and away you began to fade and drift
into another prosaic shade of gray.
as the words you spouted were found untrue,
your aura began to smell of mildew,
that reek of old stale water resting beneath a wooden door.
your profane words without a cure
your saccharine eyes, vitreous, I could see through.
leaving us askew,
and falling out of place, away I began to soar
above and beyond the spacious blue, free
warm currents with the ability to lift,
while below you looked astray.
to myself I smiled so simply,
and away you began to fade and drift
into another prosaic shade of gray.

Buildup (Free Verse by Maddie)
Buildup
Beneath the seven layers of skin,
past pumping arteries
lies the heart
in us all,
a rhythmic beat,
pulsing with life
just below the surface.
With every expansion
blood,
released throughout,
streaming through veins
carrying the throbbing end,
along with sprouts of sorrow,
and buried doubt,
resurfaces.
The lingering intensity,
coursing
spreading
emanating
from the left and right atriums
of the heart.
A collision,
creating cascades of emotions,
as the thriving torrent rushes and ripples, and races
side to side
back and forth
from top to bottom.
Searching for the exit,
a need to be heard.
Ready to burst,
emotions,
like vibrant colors of paint
spilling down the sides
dripping off the edges,
filling the mind with thoughts,
transformed into words,
soon, sliding out from the lips,
and into the vast expanse
of open air.
Beneath the seven layers of skin,
past pumping arteries
lies the heart
in us all,
a rhythmic beat,
pulsing with life
just below the surface.
With every expansion

Waiting for a Friend (free verse by Maddie)
gray clouds blanketing the sky
splotches of blue
and no sun in sight.
a long gray brick house
sits on The corner of a street.
at the end of the green and brown lawn,
there is a matching mailbox
with the number 325
in black
on the side
sitting atop,
is a small boy
with light brown hair and brown eyes
gazing down the curving street,
waiting
for his friend.
splotches of blue
and no sun in sight.
a long gray brick house
sits on The corner of a street.
at the end of the green and brown lawn,
there is a matching mailbox
with the number 325

Unending Blue ( free verse by Maddie)
mind wandering
thinking,
delving
deeper,
into the past
within the present
onto the future.
Between the mysteries
that life holds
the wonders that life shares,
the possibility
of serenity,
chaos
love
and hate
occurring
at the same time,
same realm.
The answers to one
leading
to a question,
for the answer.
mind wandering
thinking
delving
deeper
staring up
into
unending blue
thinking,
delving
deeper,
into the past
within the present
onto the future.
Between the mysteries
that life holds
the wonders that life shares,
the possibility
of serenity,
chaos
love
and hate
occurring
at the same time,
same realm.
The answers to one
leading
to a question,
for the answer.
mind wandering

delving
deeper
staring up
into
unending blue
Shadows and Wind Chimes (free verse by maddie)
the suns shadows
dancing along the folds
in the sheer curtains
moving up and down,
back and forth,
as the trees billow in the frosted wind
you can hear a wind chime off in the distance,
the soft twinkling sounds
of metal against metal.
dancing along the folds
in the sheer curtains
moving up and down,
back and forth,
as the trees billow in the frosted wind
you can hear a wind chime off in the distance,
the soft twinkling sounds
of metal against metal.

A bookshelf (Freeverse by Maddie)
A bookshelf
to some,
a bookshelf,
is pieces of wood,
constructed and cut
for household decor.
to others,
it holds,
and supports
all those childhood novels,
young adult literature,
those genuine moments in time,
with its clean-cut lines,
and
the simplicity
of angular white corners.
no matter,
how old a bookshelf becomes,
its spirit can overcome age.
a bookshelf,
is like a safe,
without the lock,
holding something precious
and open to anyone.
the smooth wood,
with no dents
or blemishes,
except for one little spot hidden behind a book,
a crack in the wood,
where the nail missed the mark.
though the imperfection,
the shelf still stands.
clean, spotless
planks of wood
the sturdiness
as it holds,
a life story.
I can see that when they were five,
they read Junie B. Jones,
a spunky six year old with a unique way
of interpreting the world
letting you know that the world is interesting when
viewed a different way.
and Shel Silverstein poems,
the outcome of letting your imagination,
spark and run wild
makes you realize that it's wondrous to have an imagination.
with a poem about a lightbulb and the sun,
and someone who ate the world.
and up on a higher shelf,
I see now that they read Maximum Ride,
a girl trying to save the world and interpret her own life,
and The Sky is Everywhere.
a world about sadness, love, and renewal,
the harshness of reality,
and the brightness of a side we never knew we had.
so bookshelves are not
just pieces of wood,
constructed and cut
for household decor.
they hold the wonders of our lives,
and not just literature,
but our memories
and our thoughts
our past selves
those shelves of wood help shape who we are
so we may look back,
and remember
who we were,
and who we are now

shining radiance,
it's rays stretch out, giving light,
hope, it can renew.

Lying in the Grass (Haiku by Maddie)
lying in the grass,
the coolness of the moist ground,
brings tranquility.
The circle with an end a beginning (freeverse by Maddie)
A circle,
has no end,
nor a beginning,
some say.
a circle,
does indeed,
have a beginning,
and an
end.
starting
is the beginning.
and closing,
is the ending.
not visible,
to the eye
but there unseen
the beginning,
fused,
with the end.
the beginning,
now the end,
and the end,
now the beginning.

Tranquility it Brings (Villanelle by Maddie)
There, on the window is a raindrop,
the beauty that will never end
going and going, on forever, never to stop.
Beginning at the top
then streaming down, with a bend,
going and going, on forever, never to stop.
There, on the window is a raindrop,
tranquility it brings, sadness, it can mend,
going and going, on forever, never to stop.
Dripping from atop
the glass as it begins to descend
plop, plop, plop.
There, on the window is a raindrop,
connecting with droplets, to blend
getting ready to fall, and drop.
Its shape is not unlike a dewdrop,
reaching across, as if it could extend
there, on the window is a raindrop
going and going, on forever, never to stop.
the beauty that will never end
going and going, on forever, never to stop.
Beginning at the top
then streaming down, with a bend,
going and going, on forever, never to stop.
There, on the window is a raindrop,
tranquility it brings, sadness, it can mend,
going and going, on forever, never to stop.
Dripping from atop
the glass as it begins to descend
plop, plop, plop.
There, on the window is a raindrop,
connecting with droplets, to blend
getting ready to fall, and drop.
Its shape is not unlike a dewdrop,
reaching across, as if it could extend
there, on the window is a raindrop
going and going, on forever, never to stop.
